Pioneer Press High School Football Rankings

1. Eden Prairie: A runner-up finish last season combined with residency in a new superpower conference should equate to a Class AAAAA championship.

2. Cretin-Derham Hall: There is no such thing as a rebuilding year at the perennial power even though 16 starters graduated from last year's big-school title team.

3. Totino-Grace: The class of Class AAAA, the Eagles are serious about a repeat championship with tough nonconference opponents Minnetonka and Mahtomedi.

4. Wayzata: Five Division I players from last season's 9-2 squad have departed, but the Trojans' depth at all positions means the cupboard is never bare.

5. Minnetonka: An 8-3 team last season returns power and might at linebacker and in the secondary.

6. Blaine: Eric Kline begins his third season as the Bengals' starting quarterback. He leads a potent offense while the defense retools for a Northwest Suburban Conference three-peat.

7. Mounds View: Seven starters on offense and six on defense return from last season's team that advanced to the Class AAAAA semifinals. Look for the Mustangs to open it up with many skill-position players returning.

8. Rosemount: The preseason pick to win the inaugural South Suburban Conference title, the Irish love to run the ball behind a strong offensive line.

9. Mahtomedi and St. Thomas Academy: Too tough to call here between these Class AAAA elite clubs. It will be settled in Week 3. Mahtomedi hasn't forgotten a loss to the Cadets in last year's state quarterfinals.

10. Highland Park: A dynamic offense with seven returning starters is headlined by playmaker Max Elliott, who passed for 18 touchdowns and more than 2,000 yards last season. The Scots will be fun to watch.
