Fun Football Facts around the state

- In 2009-10, the National Federation of High Schools indicate that Texas had 161,210 high school athletes participating in football. California was second with 104,224, Ohio was 3rd with 55,024 players participating. (Minnesota had 25,433 players participating in football.)

- The LONGEST unbeaten streak in state high school football history was accomplished by Minneapolis Washburn with 60 consecutive unbeaten games from 1966-1973.

- Joe Mauer (MN Twins Catcher) Holds the single season AAAAA record for touchdown passes thrown in a season with 41 TD passes in 2000. (He had 73 in his career)

- Larry Thompson is 20th in state history for victories with 233 victories at the start of the 2011 season. (He is #8 among active coaches)

- Adam Platt from Lakeville (1992) is second in state history for interceptions in a season with 15. (Record is 17)

- Among the 17 Class 5A teams that were "Academic All-State" in 2008 and 2009, two were from Lakeville. Both Lakeville North & Lakeville South earned Academic All State honors in 2008 and 2009.

- The all-time state record for all-purpose yards by an individual in a game was set in 2008 by Edina's Anders Lee, who gained 477 yds passing and 104 yds rushing for a total of 581 yds.

- The first recorded high school football game in Minnesota was contested in 1894 between Northfield and Faribault. Coach Knutson led the Northfield squad to a 104-0 victory. :-)

- In the past 20 years since 1989, a Lake Conference school has won the state championship 11 times.  (Eden Prairie 6, Lakeville 2, Burnsville 2, Apple Valley 1)

- In the past 20 years, a Lake Conference school has only lost twice when reaching the state championship game and both times to another Lake Conference school. (Lakeville lost to Burnsville in 1991 and Lakeville South lost to Eden Prairie in 2006)

- In 2009, the MSHSL instituted a new "Mercy Rule" which states that any game that has a 35 point difference in the 4th quarter will be running time. The clock will run continuously other than after touchdowns or official/team time outs. The clock will go back to normal timing if the score difference drops to 30 points or less during the 4th quarter.

-  The last Lakeville team that won a state championship was in 2003 when the Lakeville schools were still combined. In the state playoffs, Lakeville beat Eden Prairie 35-14, Robbinsdale Armstrong 38-28 and Hastings 34-9.

- Of the last 23 Class AAAAA or big school state championships, 20 have been won by schools with an enrollment of over 2,500 kids. Cretin Derham Hall won two of the other 3. Of the 55 other schools classified in AAAAA, only Hastings in 2001 has been able to win it all.

2011 STATE MSHSL FACTS

2011 STATE TOURNAMENT PAIRINGS:  Section 4 vs. 1;   3 vs. 2;   8 vs. 5;   7 vs. 6

Lakeville is in Section 1

Teams in Section 4 include Cretin Derham Hall, Eagan, Woddbury, East Ridge, Hastings, Henry Sibley, Park & Mpls South

The winner of Section 4 vs 1 plays the winner of Section 8 vs Section 5 in the State Semifinals on Friday night, November 19. Teams in Section 5 include Wayzata, Osseo, Cooper, Champlin Park, Maple Grove. Teams in Section 8 include Brainerd, Buffalo, Moorhead, St Cloud Tech & Elk River.

Minnesota State High School Class AAAAAA Classifications 2012-13 School Year

Each section seeds #1 – 8 – choice of seeding procedures based on current policy.

No game on Tuesday after MEA

Friday (day prior to section semifinals for other classes):  first round played within each section:  (1 v 8; 2 v 7; 3 v 6; 4 v 5)

The following Friday, top 4 from each section are matched with another section for cross-over games.  Highest seed from one section plays the lowest seed from the section with which they are paired.  High Seed is the home team.  Sections are paired with another section for two years and then rotate.  Initial pairing would be determined by a random draw. Eight winners advance to the State Quarterfinals.

Seed these 8 schools according to current Board policy:  Coaches vote to seed the top 4 and there is a blind draw for the match-ups.

Brackets set according to the seeding results – Quarterfinal round the following Friday – (same day that most other quarterfinals are played).

Semifinals in the Dome on Thursday Evening prior to the Fri/Sat Semifinals

Finals – Friday night of Prep Bowl

Section Championship game is now the State Quarterfinal. Teams who advance to the State Quarterfinal would receive a State Qualifier or State participant plaque since they will no longer receive a section championship plaque.
